  • 2001 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta - Colchagua, Rapel, Chile (9/11/2004)
Decanted for 1 hour. Nose - WOW! ALMOST didn't want to drink it, just smell the wonderfully spicy fruit! This stuff reminded me of an Aussie Shiraz as I poured it. Very dark! Strong flavors of spicy oak, nutmeg and tobacco. Although this wine is drinking well now, I think I'll wait another year to open the next. By then the oak should be better intergrated with the fruit and if that happens, that 93 will go up 2-4 points. (93 pts.)

Thanks for the note. I had a bottle of this last week. I concur that it needs more time to reach its full potential.

I am predicting this wine to be WS' wine of the year.

My note from earlier this year, I did not buy any more.
2001 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta
I think this is a CS/Merlot/Carmenere blend. Deep red purple with blackberry fruit and baking spice/oak on the nose. Black cherry/berry fruit on the palate. Nose develops sandalwood, licorice, maple syrup, blackberry liquor and very slight menthol. After an hour in the glass the finish becomes a bit tannic. This is pretty well balanced, except for acid. A bit lacking in that department IMO. If tasted blind I bet I would have guessed CA CS. It certainly has plenty of fruit and smooth tannin to match. Plush and surprisingly complex in it’s infancy. Great now with grilled beef and will probably improve over the mid term. Made for a memorable cab and cow combo. Day two, holy bejebus, what happened? Tannin, tannin, tannin and oak, oak, oak, little fruit. $45

I can't believe I didn't notice this thread until now.

No specific notes, but let me say this: the '01 needs about 4-5 years to be at its best but is an awesome wine after 5 hours of decanting right now. It will likely recieve WS top 2 WOTY and, if it is WOTY, it will be the best choice they have made in a long time. The wine -- which has significant amounts of Merlot and other grapes -- tastes like a pure Cab. It is made in the style of Karl Lawrence and I find it as or more compelling than any sub $65 CA Cab I've tried in the past year. My two tastings thus far were consistent at 93(+?) and 92.5+ points.

I agree with you. I predict this to be the WOTY.

It'd be nice if some were available in Florida, but one guy in the Miami area and another in the Palm Beach area cornered the market.

Has anyone picked up or heard anything about the 2002? I'm seeing it pop up on shelves, nice new label, but haven't seen scores/reviews yet.

Tasted my first one of these last night beside an '01 Insignia. Talk about two completely different wines and I agree that the nose on this was stunning. For the fist 30 minutes or so, I enjoyed this more than the Insignia but as time wore on and the Phelps stretched it's legs a bit I favored it more.

A very solid wine and, I think, worthy the a high WOTY ranking it received. I don't have any of this, but I wish I did.

I'll bring a 99 to our next O/L event. I have yet to try one myself.
