1993 Royal Tokaji Company Tokaji Aszu Birsalmus

This was a wonderfully intense example of botrytis in wine. Birsalmus is considered by many to be one of the “first growths” of Tokaji. The nose was strongly scented with glacee fruits, mostly apricot, pineapple and peach, along with a touch of oxidative almost Fino Sherry-like character. It also had a sort of earthy, minerally almost metallic character that I find in many botrytis-affected wines. In the mouth it is searingly intense with medium plus sweetness and a terrific acidity that pulls the finish on for what seemed to be the longest finish of all the dessert wines. The flavor of fruit punch is not too far from the fruitiness on the palate of this wine with apricots, some grapiness, pineapples and candied or caramel-dipped apple fanning out across the medium weight palate. These wines can age for a long time and this one is no exception, it will certainly improve over the next 8-12 years and live long after-exceptional. -rv
