Purchased this Hungarian dessert wine at Sam's for $45.

Lovely finisher to the evening. Bronze-gold color. Mouth-coating flavors of tangerine, caramel, and honey. Light syrupy mouthfeel. Delicious, but would have liked just smidgen more acidity to balance the sweetness. 91P.

Cheers,

Otis

Thanks for the notes, dude. I loved the 5 puttonyos, I can now imagine what the 6 puttonyos must have been like.

Remember though that Tokaji Esszencia and Tokaji Aszú Esszencia are different wines.
The first one is dremendous sweet wine, with perhaps 500 gram recidual sugar per liter. And a very low alcohol level. About 4,4 per cent only.
The one we have in Sweden, Château Pajzos Esszencia 1993, costs about 424 US-dollar for 50 cl bottle.

They gave it 96 in our best wine magazine.

Hi Otis!

Your wine has a big brother called: Disznoko Tokaji Aszu Esszencia 1993

”Bright amber, the nose was and palate displayed signs of barley sugar, overripe apricots and peaches, while the fruit is so intense yet focused. The acidity is prevalent throughout the length and leaves a fresh taste on the palate. A dessert on its own and with a huge length. Over 200 grams of residual sugar per litre.”
(The writer gave it 95 p)

But REAL Essencia are way much sweeter and much more viscose wines.
”The Esszencia can have a sugar contents of over 900 grams per litre some years. But it is really better used as a small addition to the Aszu wines than as a drink on its own.”

”2000 Disznoko Esszencia (914 g/l residual sugar)
Still fermenting and yet to be bottled. 2000 was considered to be a very good vintage, reflected in the incredible 914 g/l of sugar in this wine. With this level of sugar, it could ferment for years and still only hit a couple of degrees alcohol. Not surprisingly, the bouquet is youthful, with touches of fresh apricot. On the palate, surprise surprise, it’s sweet, though amazingly, it doesn’t taste as sweet as one would expect. The structure of the wine is quite amazing – it has the viscosity of honey and tastes like honey lifted by apricot flower. An interesting experience, but one can see why Esszencia is used primarily as a sweetening agent rather than bottling – it is literally liquid gold.”

I picked up a case of the 5 puttonyos a couple of years ago in the UK.
I don't remember the exact price, but it was a bargain - I think it
worked out at about $25 a bottle. I still have over half a case left.
It's beautiful stuff.

I opened a bottle of the 1993 Disznoko Tokaji Aszu Essenczia this past weekend and it really opened my eyes. A unique taste, and a surprising amount of acidity to balance the sugar in it. Still have a halk bottle sitting in the fridge and will have another glass or two this evening. Fantastic stuff.
