2003 Château Rieussec - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Light and rich nose of apricots and vanilla. Seamless and lusty flavors of sweet and vibrant honey, white flowers and just a touch of nutmeg, citrus and almond. A full palate with a nice balance of delicacy and complexity set against a light, oily quality and low acidity leading to a wonderfully soft, vanilla laced, long and lingering finish. From a half bottle. Still showing the fat fruit sweetness of a young sauternes, this was a viscous, complex fruit bomb. Pineapple, quince, apple, and vanilla flavors overwhelmed the custard-like richness of this low acidity offering. Hints of fennel, apricot, and spice round out this remarkable wine. Those looking for elegance are advised elsewhere, but this was successful in making its high alcohol content seem relatively weightless.

Very different from the orange and apricot primary Rieussecs of the mid 80's and earlier, this is a remarkable wine. Long life. 94 points, only held back by its heavy weight presence.
