Freind gave this to me for Crista to drink on her birthday. Drank with foie gras, and later dessert.

Light yellow color as to be expected from such a baby. Semi tight nose of orange peel, dried apricot, honey and peach. Medium bodied with lots of fatness. More of the same in the mouth with a burnt sugar quality and good botrysis. Nice, but will never be great.

This is a tough vintage. I don't know if I want to really buy any.

Do you have any idea J. when it might loosen up a bit. I'd guess it should be at its best in four or five years.

That would be my rough estimate as well. Of course you have a lot more d'Yquem experience than I do.

Medium straw/gold with apricots, honey, botrysis, candied peach, orange peel and spice. Medium plus bodied, medium plus intensity, elegant with more honey, apricot, botrysis and orange. Balanced. 90pts.

Straw gold, medium plus nose of dried apricots, cooked peaches, pineapple and crème brulee. Medium plus body, medium plus intensity, medium plus acidity. Palate follows through with good balance. This is just missing the extra that makes d’Yquem so special. Still a good value. 91pts.

Can you be more specific on the "good value" comment? At what price point is this a good value?

These were purchased at $60 a 375m which is a pretty good value for d'Yquem.

Thanks. I think I paid $65, so I am starting to feel a bit better about my purchase.

Jason, should I keep mine a while longer before opening? I have a plan to open this 1999 on New Year's eve.

Time won't hurt it, but it is not going morph into something else either. Go for it!!

  • 1999 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (11/15/2006)
    375 ml
From Riedel "Extreme" Sweet Wine stems.
Abundant honey, apricot and a touch of lime. Definitely from the d'Yquem family, but clearly not the favored son. While this was enjoyable, it by no means stands above other Sauternes costing half the price. Of course, this has plenty of years to go before it evolves, but can certainly be consumed now without feeling like the bottle has been wasted. (92 pts.)

Tonight, I enjoyed my first-ever d'Yquem experience with the 1999 at Troquet in Boston (OUTSTANDING restaurant on the Common, by the way). An amazing experience....all the more impressive given how lackluster this bottling appears to be relative to a standard (and expected) d'Yquem bottling.

I own two 375's of the 1994 but have yet to open a bottle. Cellar Tracker says to drink up that vintage by 2012 so I need to start looking for some of the better vintages.

I think I'll start with the $4,899 6L of the 2001 on costco.com.
