WOW! i had this with dessert at prime steakhouse in las vegas. i don't know to much about port especially aged port but i have to say that this was unreal. sweet dark cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of chocolate. the tannin was still very strong and the finnish was unreal. if you have some of this in your cellar i will be forced to envy you.

I have some 1997 Taylor.

You may be envious (although the 1977 Fonseca is better as is the 1948 and 1927 Fonseca).

i am still working on this guys. i would love to come down. that's a bit late for dinner though but i am sure we could work it out. the only problem is every wine dinner i've been to tends to last about 3-4 hours.

That's right, davidn. It's a tough game. I got my ass kicked a few times & such. And, I roughed up people a few times.

And, many in the NHL do also. BUT, a tough game differs from having no respect for the other player.

In a recent tasting of vintage ports, this was my favorite. (I scored it low!) I was so stunned by the wine that in the middle of the tasting I surfed to K&L on my web-enabled cellphone and ordered a case. This is remarkable juice!
  • 1977 Taylor Porto [Porto, Douro, Portugal] 97 pts. (4/18/2004)
    On describing this to the other attendees, I popped out with "Oh man, this just rocks!" This actually had the lightest color by far in the flight, but that was a red herring. The nose was quite medicinal and showed some spirit. The palate was utterly seamless with figs, dates, raisins, fruitcake, maple syrup, molasses, and treacle yet with a very silky and vibrant texture. The finish is luscious and long with so much life and elegance. This is the best port I have ever tasted.

This was an unbelievable wine from an unbelievable day of porto. I haven't typed up my notes yet, but this was definitely one of the highlights for me. Still sooo young!

Better not let Roy catch you posting notes already!

There's a case of this available on the upcoming Acker auction (Apr 24). Bidding history looks like the price is hovering around $1000 for a 12/btl case, which even after the 16% buyers commission, surcharges, and shipping would be less than anything wine commune has it listed for right now.

I'm contemplating a bid. Anybody want to split a case?

The auction ended up bidding to the point where it wasn't a good deal.

My current plan is to loiter around ericlev's cellar for when he opens a bottle.

My note:
  • 1977 Taylor Porto [Porto, Douro, Portugal] 96 pts. (4/18/2004)
    Pretty garnet color turning to strawberry pink on the rim. This is a bit spirity with the alcohol hitting my sinuses. Fairly closed on the nose, this is still very big and very tight. Raspberry, mocha, cherry, lots of tannin.. This is still too young to drink. Enjoyable now, but will improve a great deal. Potentially 98+

You are welcome any time Scott. I have a bottle set aside for drinking sooner rather than later. The other 11 are headed off to Seattle Wine Storage soon so they are safe from my grubby, impatient paws.

So I have one of these left and would like to drink it at it's peak.

Could I concievably drink it sooner rather than later and be ok? And by later I mean years from now, and by sooner I mean in then next 6 months.
