2005 Fess Parker Viognier - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County (1/20/2007)
WIML87,PURPLE87,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted January 20, 2007 at home as part of the Wino Depot Tasting With Friends event. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Weiss Wein glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of lychee and apricots, fairly light aromas. Maybe some peach as well. Flavors of passion fruit, apricots and maybe some cantaloupe or honeydew melon. Light acidity with light body. Fairly simply and straightforward wine to be consumed now. Based on our local retail price of $16.99 I’d consider the value here acceptable by just a hair. (87 pts.)

Why not? Take a sip yourself before you pull that special bottle out from behind the bar.

Wine with a celebrity's name on the label just haven't done it for me in the past. Fess Parker, Arnold Palmer, Coppola, and Greg Norman have all been disappointing to me.

Don't discount Fess Parker so quickly - there's a quality revolution going on there lead by Larry Shafferer (posts on eBob), and the wines are getting better and better. IMO, a winery to keep on the radar.

Mother stopped by for an afternoon visit and was hankering for a drink. So I popped this one open, knowing it would be reliable and well received. Sweet nose of candied peaches and mango custard. On the palate, the rich buttery texture complements the ripe peach, mango, and mineral flavors. With air, more roundness, but also more heat. Long minerally finish. I happen to prefer the Rodney's Vineyard viognier much more, but this was quite decent, if a bit simple, and my mother was more than happy to take the rest of the bottle home with her. (88 pts.)
