Ngatarawa is a Hawkes Bay producer knwon for good value reds , whites and dessert wines. Their top labels - the Alwyn (a red, a chard, and a dessert Riesling)- are world class wines, while their lowest tier- the Stables is an every day drinker.

They're on special in my shop at the moment - so I thought I would taste one of these little monkeys. It sells for about $8 USD.
Tasted in ISo's at room temp (around 16 degree celsius.)

The colour is a nice pineapple gold. The viscosity is quite light but that is no real surprise considering that the wine is only %11.5 Alcohol. Initial sweeter honeyed fruit of pear, lychee, apricot (possibly a little botrytis infection) and peach comes through but as my nose calibrated hints of wet wool and a little sulphur smell came through also. Although these lowered the wines overall appeal in my mind they were not dominating and would probably be overlooked by many people. The palate exhibited good acids and notes of granny smith apples (often the first sign of malic acid dominance came through) dominated the palate throughout. The palate was light and the finish of the wine was softer than expected. Length was very short. All in all an okay wine but not a dessert wine I would go out of my way to look for. It is literally a quaffer offering little complex or concentrated flavours or texture.
I think there are better alternatives out there for the $5-$10 USD bracket. Overall a 82 pointer.
