  • 2003 Amisfield Pinot Noir - New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago (11/3/2006)
Consumed at Michael Mina San Francisco last night for my anniversary dinner. While the food was truly incredible, I definitely found a great QPR wine! Well for restaurant prices of course...I think the bottle retails for about $30 or so but it was $62 at M.M.'s. Since we wanted a wine that will pair well with the food, we decided on a pinot noir. Never had a New Zealand Pinot. Screwcap.

Twisted and poured in our glasses with our lobster Amuse Bouche served 3 ways. Bright rasberry, cream, and jam smell. It's a combination of an elegant pinot and a more medium bodied, jammier wine like a Sea Smoke Botella. The wine just blossomed in the glass for at least 2 hours. Complex fruit that was extremely fragrant. The nose continued to improve with some spice but the fruit was always the primary taste and smell. It's not a fruit bomb but it is lovely. You cannot confuse this with any other varietal, unlike some pinots out there. Delicious and left a superlong finish on the front of the tongue.

The only time the wine underperformed was at the 2.5 hour mark, after the desserts of chocolate. The wine started to taste slightly bitter and the fruit was getting tart. Not sure if it was the time or the food or both. But I was too full to drink my last sip anyways.....

Awesome wine for the price! And unique because it's a Kiwi wine. (90 pts.)

Same restaurant July 2005, I noticed that they had a Central Otago Felton Road PN on the menu. I asked the somm if he had the '02 Block V Felton Road, and sure enough there were 3 in the cellar. They as many restaurants sometimes have bottles that are not on the menu, possibly because they are nearly gone. A pleasant surprise. Sometimes it pays to ask whether there are wines in the cellar that are not listed. Sometimes you can get a gem or a bargain or both.

I had 04 and 05 at the winery-
both are tremendous efforts, worth of buying couple bottles each.
