Had this with a light pizza the other day. Delicious but not as good as the 2002 Dog Point. I didn't notice it was New Dog until I was halfway done the bottle. Typical tropical fruit and grapefruit flavors and smells, but it just seemed a bit weaker/thinner than last year's Dog Point.

86 TJ points

PS: Do they still make a Dog Point, or did the New Dog replace Dog Point?

TJ... According to wine-searcher, they have both for the 2003 vintage.

Figures. I didn't check the bottle before I bought it at Corridor Wine (same ownership as Total Wine).

Rat bastahds.

I'll have to seek out the Dog Point then to see how it compares.

I had this again today while Mrs. TJ and I were hosting a baby shower for one of Mrs. TJ's co-workers. I'd perhaps kick up my rating a point or even two at this point. While still not a 90+ pointer, it has come around a bit and delivered a nice zingy bit of lime, grapefruit and a dash of lemon in over a more filled out frame. Nice at this point, so drink up. If it continues to improve, it'd be great on a late spring day while you dream of the next vintage becoming available for the upcoming summer.

Historically I like this wine for its' QPR value but it seems based on your notes and those of previous vintages (i.e. 2002) it seems to be fading or inconsistent. Too bad.

Thanks for the update. I need to pick up a bottle soon to retry.

Is it supposed to be better or worse than the Dogpoint?

Board-o-- I think this bottle cost me $13 or $14. I believe this must be a new or different vineyard or blend as why else would they call it New Dog instead of DogPoint. I am just guessing though, to be sure. I suspect that this is likely a less mature set of vineyards and perhaps the flavors are not all coming around yet as such. Perhaps in another vintage or two, things will improve. I personally do not recall buying any of the 2003 Dogpoint, which is troubling since I enjoyed the 2002 Dogpoint so much.

That said, I am enjoying this wine a bit more of late and I hope it continues to improve in to the spring.

Downed another bottle of this with dinner tonight. I think 87 sounds right, right about now. Delicious and relatively cheap. I like it!

i might be wrong here, but i was told by a supplier that goldwater had been buying the grapes from Dogpoint vineyards, who had been farmers growing grapes. Last year they decided to start making the wine themselves, although they also sold some grapes on. Hence there is Goldwater New Dog and Dogpoint vineyards Sauvignon and Section 94 Sauvignon, which by the way is absolulely the best NZ sauvignon Ive ever tasted. It blows the Dry River out of the water. leaves cloudy bay in its dust.

Thanks for that info, grazz (welcome to VC by the way). Is this 'new' producer, Dogpoint Vineyards, a more limited production type situation, or should it be reasonably readily available. I have not seen this here stateside in the DC area (yet). I'll keep my eyes open for it.Grazie!

http://www.goldwaterwine.com

http://www.dogpoint.co.nz/static/index.html

these are the websites of the two wines. The dogpoint lists a usa distributer in California and Massachussets (Ma?) They might be able to help you, but you guys have really tough shipping laws dating back to the Volstead Act dont ya.

If you can get any of the Dogpoint Section 94, get it. It has the most amazing floral scented nose with hints of Jasmine and Elderflower, before opening out into tropical fruits, lychees, and citrus elements. Nice and crisp on the palate with a lingering fresh acidity and an amazingly long clean length this wine will change your views on Sauvignon and especially NZ Sauvignon. Youll never settle for Cloudy bay again!!

(you might have noticed im not a really big fan of C.B. As Chuck D said, Dont Beleive the Hype!!)
