An interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal; the weekly wine column by Dot Gaiter and John Brecher...

Bull's testicals (aka Rocky Mountain Oysters).

How would you prepare them and what wine would you pair with them?

I've only had Rocky Mountain Oysters a few times and each time it's been outdoors in the hot weather at a big western BBQ... They can be quite good, but I have a hard time even thinking about wine with RMO's when a gullet full of ice cold beer may be nearby.

There are some things I think don't really need to be eaten unless you are an indigenous non-western culture. Cows nuts are one (a pair) of those things that fit into that category. Give me the prime rib and bottle of cabernet.....

babsy, I believe the wine to which you're referring is Ball Buster.

I must agree with Corkage. I will eat escargot with gusto. I can't get enough foie gras or raw sea urchin roe (uni) with raw quail's egg yolk or whole baby octopus, but I draw the line at Rocky mountain Oysters. I believe I'd have a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach if I ever attempted to eat one.

As a native Kansas country boy, I've had my share of rocky mountain oysters. As was said before, always in the heat of summer (sliced, batter dipped and deep fried) and served with lots of beer. I can't think of a single 'nut fry' (as the festivities are know) where you wouldn't have been hit over he head with the bottle of wine you brought. Actually, now that I think of it, there may have been a few bottles of Boon's around for the women folk...

As for the actual RMO, the're great. Very tendor. Of course, most deep fried foods are great, regardless of what's inside.

I love fine dining and excellent food too. Escargot is good, but to me it's like a steamed artichoke -- just a vehicle to eat butter and garlic. I love pate' but I'm not a fan of foie gras. The rest of the stuff you mentioned is starting to make me queasy...

I'm like Corkage, I think. People all over the world enjoy eating weird s**t, but most times (IMO) that's because they had to. I don't care to eat "parts" if I can afford not to.

Which is why I am amazed at Fear Factor. I know I could do all the stunts, but couldn't eat a damn thing...

Rocky Mountain Oysters are awesome.

When I was little I used to help my grandpa and my uncles with their herd. We'd castrate and brand the cattle, and they'd dump the sacks into a bucket. We'd take that home and fry 'em up.

They taste like Chicken McNuggets.

I had them also a couple of times. It's OK. But, not for me. I just wanted to try, but no more... no more.

I was tricked into eating them once as a child by my best friend. They weren't bad, but not something I will eat again any time soon. They called them calf fries when I had them. Sliced and battered and deep fried.

Man, for a bunch or gourmands you guys are pretty picky!

Bet they wouldn't be so picky over on that foodie.com site.

Eric,

Rocky Mountain Oysters are fun to eat. I would deep fry them with a very light batter and serve them either with a Riesling or Champagne. The article this morning said they liked them with a big Cab.

It is impossible to have an intelligent conversation here

You think this is bad... See the post over in Random Thoughts about a momento you can leave for you wife after you have died.

I can't wait to here your thoughts on that one.
