Erik,
Make sure it has two temp settings (usually regular cook and high for faster cooking). I wouldn't spend a bundle on one - they cook pretty much the same (high end vs. low end). I have experiemented over the years with my own recipes - one that stands out is a version of beef osso bucco (using a roast beef instead of shanks). If you want the recipe let me know. Great with cab

Well, we have 2 one is a really cheap basic one from Target the other a larger slightly fancier Kitchen Aid one. The larger one is definitely better, and obviously makes larger amounts.

The higher and lower settings are a good feature.

i actually think they all have a high and low setting, also a warm setting for when the food is done. The main differecnce between the $100 ones and the $25 ones (as far as I can tell) is that the more expensive ones have timers. i think it is nearly impossible to overcook things in the slow cooker, so I would just go to target and buy one of the larger Rival ones - I think the big ones are around $35.

it is truly a great appliance. I have found that less is deginitely more in terms of recipes - you don't have to do a lot to the food for it to taste really good.
