| I wanted to lower my cholesterol and find another breakfast food especially now since the weather is getting cooler and yogurt is not preferable. My experience with oatmeal has been very limited to instant Quaker Oats strawberries and cream "oatmeal."
What oatmeals do you use? I've seen this oatmeal in a silver tin can and Irish oatmeal but I wasn't sure how this would taste. Is stovetop cooking better? What about adding flaxseed for omega-3s? TIA.

| Stovetop cooking is better as you can control consistency more that way. I don't like "oatmush". But then again I eat the cheap crap with the puritan on the label. And I add lots of butter, half and half, cinnamon, and brown sugar which likely negate any beneficial qualities of the food. And definitely a pinot noir or oaky chard. | | | |

| if you add flaxseeds, don't forget to crush them first. i eat enough salmon or i'd add those as well(like i used to). | | | |

| The oatmeal you buy in the box really doesn't have that much fiber, which is what will lower your cholesterol. You have to fine "steel cut oats." I'd have to google it again to remember exactly why, but it has MUCH more fiber. I actually saw this tucked away at a local Farm Fresh recently, so it shouldn't be impossible to find! If you like the sweetness of Quaker boxes, you may need to do a little spicing up for this one to fit your taste. It's pretty hardy...nothing some butter and brown sugar can't fix! | | | |

| There's a brand of Irish Oatmeal that the health food store carries...like Murphy's or something. It has good body and good flavor. | | | Visit The Butcher Block at http://www.butcherblocktampa.com/ | |

4 grams per 1/2 cup is more than enough to do the job, plus with the addition of raisins and dates...

but yes, steel cut does have about double.

| exactly my point, who needs the bother! quaker oatmeal, 1 minute microwave(i don't even do that, i just add hot water and let it sit for a few). so you get 4 grams of fiber instead of 8, just add banana/date/whatever you want to make up the difference. life can be easy! | | | |

| I am in the T-Bird camp on this one. I use instant, add hot water at the office and that is that. Can't get to bothered about it. | | | |

| I use the quaker instant too. Never have made it the slow way.
Are y'all using 'plain' or any of the flavored crap I use (apples & cinnamon, etc)? Never thought of adding my own stuff to it like I do with granola and yogurt. | | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| Well, there is a pretty big difference with well-made real oatmal, but I don't care enough to bother normally.
I usually have the flavored crap.
