What's everyone opening up for their Easter dinner? (If they are having one)

Since it's a bunch of relatives, I'll bring some lower end stuff....but for RawRed and maybe a person or two who might appreciate a good wine at least a little, I was thinking of bringing something better.

What is a traditional Easter dinner anyway?

For Easter dinner...

A bottle of Kistler chard for my wife's cousin.

One of the following for reds...

99 Shafer Relentless
97 Gallo Barrelli Creek Cab
99 Whitehall Lane Cab
01 Mitolo GAM Shiraz
01 Marquis Philips Shiraz
01 Henry's Drive Reserve Shiraz

Decisions decisions decisions

Thankfully Easter dinner with my relatives means fine wine. We are having lamb and a traditional French cheese and potato gratin (no one does gratin better than my mother in law). Some big California reds are in order. I am bringing a Bryant Family 2000.

Don't know what is for dinner yet but I do know what we are drinking. '99 Isosceles. Unless we are going to my sister-in-laws, then I will probably just go with the flow (ie Yeungling).

I'm hosting, and would much prefer lamb a la the Jones clan. But in deference to my mom, we are having the traditional ham. I prefer a slightly sweet wine to balance the salty ham. And mom loves Riesling. So it will be 2001 Eroica and a red to be named later. Have seen lots of comments about the 2000 Hundred Acre Cab. Any thoughts on whether it would work with a honey glazed ham, or would that be pushing it?

Oh yeah. Almost forgot. We will finish with the April TAA (Grahams 10 year Tawny-2001 bottling)

jeremy,

that's a good law, it gives you the day off!

i haven't decided on wine yet, but you can rest assured there will be something big & chocolaty to go with the easter candy & grilled steaks & lamb chops .

Zinfandel goes great with ham. Therefore, Hundred Acres will go great with ham as well. If you have already purchased it then drink up. If you haven't save the $150 and buy something else.

I agree on the Zinfandel-ham pairing. That's my red of choice, usually.

The Hundred Acre is already in the cellar, and I intend on heeding the advice to drink them within 18 months. So one will fall on Sunday. Any decanting needed?

Jeremy... and Gus...

Sure you get the day off but it sure makes for a lousy day at the cash register

JimmyV -

Regarding the Hundred Acres, I disagree a bit. I did not find this mistakable for a Zin, though I did get some brambly components that I do not associate normally with Cab. However, I would recommend decanting for at least an hour, perhaps two. The one we had on Sunday was decanted once before arriving, and then for an hour at the event before tasting, and it was beautiful.

Eric:

...and you think it can hold up to a honey glazed ham, potato gratin and several boring vegetables that will appease youngsters?

Gus,
yeah I do get to go to the jazz fest, but I'm not just closed on Sunday, also have to be closed Friday and Monday. But thats okay, I need a couple of days off.

Davidn,
Yeah it is hard on the till but could be worse I could've had to close on Sundays up until three years ago!

We've got the kids home (well, actually at the Beach House) Saturday night, so we'll pull out a couple good bottles to serve with the lamb. The horde arrives on Sunday, so I'm thinking a middling Zin to serve with the Roast Beef.

Given that we'll be at the Beach, I'm sure we'll open a couple White Burgundies as well.

I thought the point of easter was to take a wine from the cellar that you know is over-the-hill and then try and resurrect it with some air-time?

Jones -

Do you happen to know the recipe for the cheese and potato gratin?
