Drawing air for what? To expell cooking smoke?

Another bit of advice. While working on a Diva stove I was sometimes "annoyed" by the way they engineered their controls for the stove. They have a sleek push button system built into the actual graphite stove top just below the burners. Very easy to clean BUT also very easy to hit accidentally while cooking and cleaning. I actually prefer the controls as Vikng has theirs...knobs on the side or preferably down on the front of the system(Facing your belt buckle)

Yes. The downdraft on most of these units is in the rear (except Jenn-Air which is in the center of the unit). We can not put an overhead vent hood due to ceiling heights, etc.

I guess it comes down to local codes in your area. I wouldn't hesitate to go w/ the induction top. It's CLEARLY superior to anything else you can purchase. I don't believe it will generate anymore smoke/grease than the unit you have right now. Although they may "spec" a larger pipe..if you had no problems w/ your previous top I would expect the Viking to produce about the same (or a little more) amount of smoke/steam.

abg-- thanks for the insight. I'm still not sure I'd want one though.

It doesn't really matter anyway, because in two months or so I am switching from electric coil to gas -- it's a done deal.

Got me a Thermador.Check it out here.

We could start a new thread:

"What's the hottest cooktop ever?"

It's been over 3 years since we visited this topic. I am looking to add a single "stand-alone" unit to my kitchen, as opposed to buying a complete cooktop. Not looking for a sunken install, but rather a "hot plate" type unit that is portable and can be used insde or out. There are many on the market and they seem to run from $120-$500+. Anyone here have any experiences with these that they would like to share? A company called Sunpentown seems to make several models that have been favorably reviewed and can be had at Target.com or Amazon.com from between $150-$250. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Beta testing a new signature.

I'm also interested in that type of unit. When I looked a few years ago, I don't think they were on the market, mostly just complete cooktops.
