Opaque purple medium-to-medium plus nose of florals, blue berry, black berry, smoke and light saddle leather. Medium plus body, medium plus intensity, medium acidity. Silky and seamless on the palate with great flow and texture. Blue and black fruits, oakspice, smoke and florals. Balanced, this was great!!! 96pts.

Our Run Rig notes are a little closer than our Blankiet impressions (though my RR was '01):

"Had this last night w/ steak, lamb, figs and a little pasta at Angelini Osteria. My first Run Rig experience. Wonderfully complex, rich wine, dense and full-bodied without being over-ripe or over-extraced. As others have noted, certainly not an over-the-top fruit bomb. Nose of slightly smoky, liqueurish blackberries and other medium to dark fruit, with a lovely suggestion of apricot and floral notes from the small % of viognier. On the palate, extracted, rich and expansive yet lively and elegant. Somewhat earthy/barnyardy (in a good way) on the finish, though this faded as the wine opened over a couple hours. Very impressive, satisfying wine, glad I have a few more of these as well as the '02 (which I haven't yet tried). Probably won't crack another for a few years, though. What do others think is the optimal drinking window for the '01 and '02?"
