We served a glass blind to my friends father and he asked if it was a 10Euro bottle of Cotes Du Rhone, when he got the glass the wine had totally shut down.
Cheers
Interesting that he would think first of Cotes du Rhone. I don't usually think of Cotes du Rhone as being synonymous with a wine that's shut down, but more likely a lighter wine that's fairly fruity.

| Interesting past discussion on this wine. This is not the type of wine we are into anymore (too syrupy and oaky...) but it did taste good. Note that I am oak-sensitive but I think it will end up tasting like espresso and not in a good way.
- 2001 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (8/15/2008)
Dark slightly cloudy purple with a red rim; This wine had an herbal, maybe minty note on the nose with coffee, mint; and blackberry fruit flavors. An interesting mix of flavors. It had nice concentration but a very syrupy texture. I don't see this one continuing to improve for my tastes - the coffee (oak) seemed to be more prominent now than with previous bottles. Hold depending on your preferences. (90 pts.)

| Hhmm...this is the only bottle of Aussie wine I still own. Actually, this was a gift from Dr. Tannin. Should I kill it now or continue the experiment?

| My personal preference is to hold my Dead Arms (lol). I have 3 bottles of the 2001 vintage left and I'll open 1 each in 2008, 2010 and 2012. I'm still sitting on 6 of the 2002 vintage. | | | Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| I'd drink them Joe. Recent half bottles of the 01 have been in pretty obvious decline. Obviously the 750s should be in better shape - and that is why I suggest drinking them now rather than waiting on them. A recent vertical of Dead Arm was not kind to these bottlings save for the 98 imo. | | | |

| Hmmm...not sounding good there. Fortunately I have one sitting in the queue ready to go. I'll pop it soon and readjust the balance accordingly.
Thanks for the notes. | | | Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| $60, Retail
Well, 1 met its destiny this weekend. It looks like Winetex brought this thread up from the dead (last post in 05). That's a fine bottle of wine, but a 98 pointer from Parker (to quote Dan is - lunacy). It is not & will never be. I would say to drink or hold, give it some air time. I decanted it about an hour or so.
Rating: 92 points, drink or hold. As for me, I will not be "holding" for a long time. I can't say it is in decline, but I will drink my 2 remaining bottle within 3 years for sure.

| 2001 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (9/1/2008) WIML91-92
Tasted September 1, 2008.
Opened and briefly decanted about 30 minutes, mostly for sediment. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, vibrant hue throughout. Nose of smoke, plum, cassis. Flavors of berries, plums and maybe some currants. Medium acidity, tannins and medium to full body. (91 pts.) | | | Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| Although I wouldn't exactly say this wine was in decline when I had it I just had a feeling that I can't see it heading anywhere but there in the reasonably near future. I have 2 more bottles scheduled for 2010 and 2012 and I think I'm going to push them up to 2009 and 2010 and re-evalute again next year. | | | Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| I agree, wineismylife, & my remaining 2 bottles will fulfill their destiny by 2010. It is a good bottle of wine. One just should not pay attention to the 98 point rating. | | | |

| Wow, surprising notes - I had mine slated to start drinking in 2010. Guess I better check in on one... | | | 2008: the end of an error | |
