- 2003 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna - Australia, South Australia (10/22/2008)
Popped and poured. Deep red-purple. Aromas of black cherry, roasted meats, olive tapenade.......and a touch of coconut. Aromatically I would say this is more similar to a Northern Rhone than the typical Penfolds Bin Series Shiraz. Medium-plus in mouth, the flavors were initially quite tight with little fruit showing over the chewy tannins. However, after about 3 hours of air this Shiraz transforms into a very nice drink, the red and black fruits showing very well over savory notes of game. A touch of green extends on the oak-filled close. Should improve with mid-term cellaring. Not sure if this wine is worth $20+ but at $11.95 it makes a very nice QPR selection. (88 pts.)
