• 2005 Penfolds Bin 389 - Australia, South Australia (9/13/2008)
  Popped and poured, drank over two nights. Dark hue. Have to start by saying that I'm always comforted by a Penfolds Bin Series wine........from the deeply stained cork to the familiar profile on the nose, it's always a nice treat. In the 2005 vinatge, Bin 389 is a 52% Cabernet Sauvignon/48% Shiraz blend. Black fruits, chocolate covered cherry, mocha, vanilla bean and spices leap from glass. Very concentrated, the 2005 also features a wall of tannins............so it didn't come as any surprise that on the first night it wasn't yet telling the truth. On night two this youthful Aussie had barely moved..........but did just enough to feature more of the lush fruit and spice that makes Bin 389 so enjoyable. Still, it was more or less closed for business..............however, no matter how tight it's drinking right now, this wine clearly has all the stuffing needed to ensure an impressive drinking experience. I would wait at least 2 more years before even touching a bottle of this............should be singing in 4-6! (88 pts.)
