Whoah babeh!

I had this wine with ojeffso a long while back.... I believe right around when the 2001 vintage came out. We had a comparison tasting between these two.

This is honestly a completely different wine now... and that was only... 9 or 10?? months ago.

I can best describe this wine as a (I kid not, and yes I know I get excited when talking about it) less fruit forward (still very fruit forward though), but more complex, 2001 MP #9.

It now has that same sweet sweet nose the #9 gets after about 6 or more hours of decanting, but this has it right after opening. No decanting time needed on this 2000 MP Shiraz this time around.

Ok.. on to the real TN:

Using theWine Color Wheel this wine is a dark garnet color. It left a purple/black cork that had the beginnings of that crystalized tannin..... The stuff that MudPuppy likes putting up in his gums like chewing tobacco.

It has a nice irish creamy mint thing going on with the nose, with lots of sweet chocolate covered cherries coming off the top.
On the attack is at first a very slightly biting fruit bomb that quickly mellows out into layers of complexity on the mid-palate. Lots of cherry chocolate, blue and black fruit, minty oak, very fine tannins with just a little bit of an edge left to them... mostly just sweet and round. There is nothing in this wine that I can fault. Only things I keep discovering that give me lots and lots of pleasure. Just before I get to the finish, some earthy tones come out, leaving a black fruit finish and a very long aftertaste. Smooth, yet still has good structure with good acidity.

This wine has truly surprised me. I knew it was good, but didn't think it'd get this good in such a short time period. I can't remember exactly going back, I think I rated it 91. This is now a super duper excellent wine. I've gotten more conservative in my ratings lately...

But Rev Rates it: 93

Best QPR I own.

Last comment, if someone were to give this a drinking range.... I think now would be the first 1/4 of it's range.

Rev,

That bloody thing is useless, its got all those funny shades that have nothing to do with red wine and it doesnt have inky black.

May as well use a paint chart. Looks like I will have to design a red bigot one myself.

WOW.

This stuff is aging nicely! Still super young... still some good tannin, acidity, fruit, etc.... but the complexity of this once one dimensional wine is coming around nicely. Don't get me wrong though, this is still a Marquis Philip wine through and through, but is starting to really come into it's own.

The first post of this topic is still fairly on the money, except there seems to be some bottle variation in terms of how much oak is present in the wine. This bottle didn't have as much minty oak, but was still nice and chocolately... very dark fruit and some great complexity coming out of this sucker. This wine also seems younger than the one I posted on here before.

Rev still rates it: 93 This is a fun wine.... I might have to sneak this into a big high dollar shiraz tasting someday.......

Just had a bottle of this... fairly amazed it is still going... definitely a drink now. It's old, but still is holding together nicely. Bright enough to be enjoyable, oak didn't overpower at all. Fun to open.

I had my last of these in the fall, and it outperformed a 2005 MP 9 by a comfortable  margin.

Hah, really? Reminds me of a comment ojeffso made a couple years back. Really seemed like Marquis Philips roped people in with a couple years of intense vineyard management for good quality, and once they had the reputation, they went for volume over quality to make the buck.
