It's been too long since I posted a burgundy TN! Guillon is a small and pretty obscure producer, but he's made some good, if slightly unexciting wines from various village 1er Cru vineyards in Gevrey (mostly), Chambolle and Morey (and two Grand Crus - Mazis Chambertin and Clos Vougeot). Most of the time, I find the wines consistent but rarely hit high emotional notes.
Last night, I had a bottle of this and opened it with some grilled lamb chops. it was one of the first 'high end" burgundies I bought for $35 (ah, those were the days!) several years ago, and it was showing beautifully last night.
- 1999 Jean-Michel Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (8/2/2006)
A real treat- showing nicely about 2 hours after opening. Notes of dark berries with ample hints of spices - well balanced and precise, showing beautiful perfume, well balanced tannins and grip. A fantastic match with mustard and rosemary encrusted lamb chops. (92 pts.)
Posted from CellarTrackerI would even hold this wine for a few more years, as the structure suggests a nice evolution ahead for this wine.
