i am starting a new thread so someday the tn will be easier to find

this is going to be a a very short note, because as you know i hate to post notes.

this wine is huge and imo bigger than the 01. right now it has been open for for about 30hrs and it just starting to come around. this is going to be one hell of a wine someday. perfect balance as short said in another thread with gobs of fruit and tannin. i disagee with him on the aging though. compared with the 01 i had this wine seems to be tighter. right now i have to say this is a 96++ point wine with the ability to move to 98 someday (i hope). i am very happy to have a nice stash in the cellar still.

everytime i drink a qc i have to sit back a scratch my head as to why i don't buy more. if this wine had napa on the bottle they could command at least $150 a bottle. $76 is a steal compared to all the ho-hum napas out there in this price range. bravo again to the golitzin's!!!

This is a GREAT young cab & a GREAT bottle of wine. I do stress the word, young. It's already pretty much @ the WOW-level. Given the appropriate cellar time, I see no reason for this wine not to be a WOW wine. Bravo!

Considering the price tag, this wine's QPR is A++ (Ivy League level).

The best QC for me to date. The disclaimer being that prior vintages of QC were in the 91-94 range to me.

Well done & hold.

I’ve had the 93?, 95, 99, & 00. The 02 is my fav so far. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed all a lot & you cannot go wrong with any of those. But, the 02 could be a real WOWer.

I had the 00 not too long ago & thought it need a few...

you didn't get a chance to try the 01 before it closed up?

third and final update for a long while. my opinion of this wine hasn't changed. this has to be one of the best wine deals going today. i stand by my statement that if they slapped napa on the bottle it would be a $150 wine easily. my final score at this time is 97+ and hold for at least 5 yrs. i tend to think this might be a longer lived monster than the 01, but i am completely guessing on this. either way i have a bunch to try over the years and i will be looking for more at reasonable prices. if you have this in your cellar be happy. if you have a bunch be real happy

Argh, the first vintage I pass (I have 1998-2001) and it is a great one. Oh well - I'll have to wait for the 2003s. Thanks for the TN, Ant.

Thanks Anthony for your 3 part series!
I only got a short visit with the '02 at the QC release party.
You state plainly it is a hold for 5 years, and I know I should wait, but on the other hand it looks like that bottle gave much pleasure!
In the face of better judgment, I think I'll probably open one in the next month.

I am very happy to have a few of these. If not for VC, I wouldn't be the proud owner of these bottles.
I know QC isnt unheard of, but I certianly wouldn't have even looked up the ratings on ebob without the info from VC'ers and then ebob. With only 6 in the cellar, tn's like these are very helpfull. Thanks Ant.

lorenzo,

if you have them in quantity go and open one up, just be prepared to wait at least 24 hrs for anything to happen. on hind sight i should over just left it in the decanter overnight instead of rebottling it.

imho, the '02 is the most approachable young QC CS since the '98, which has since shut down a bit. The '02 is so fruit forward and ripe (blueberries), it is almost not recognizable as a QC when tasted blind. QC generally has one of the best structures to age of a domestic CS but, based on a first pass tasting, I would look to drink the '02 while waiting for the previous 5 vintages to develop.

New Tanzer rating/notes released today. 93+ for '02 QC, 93-96 pts for the '03.

In his introductory notes concerning WA wines, after saying that he'd tasted some good wines, he continues (re: WA wines): "I have to add, though, that I continue to taste too many remarkably bad, if not downright flawed, wines that have no place in a civilized society." Ouch!

93+ is an appropriate score for the 2002 IMO.

I'd say around 94-95 with a lot of upside. I've only cracked one, probably won't try another for at least 2-3 years.

91 Dominus
90 Pichon Baron
89 Montrose
95 Joseph Phelps Insignia
97 Joseph Phelps Insignia
97 Etude
01 Hundred Acre
01 Rudd Oakville Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon
02 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

In this lineup a few months ago in Upstate NY, I thought the 02 QC was right up there. It stood up very well to these heavyweights. I would like to go back, re-taste this wine again, but it was outstanding that night. Yes, 93+/95 is not over rating this wine. Have to revisit (in time)...

  • 2002 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, Washington (1/14/2006)
Quilceda Creek 1996-2002 vertical (Chicago suburbs): Nose of buttery oak and purple fruit. Concentrated blueberry and purple fruit on the palate, followed up by spicy oak. Very similar in spice to the 02 Insignia I tried a month ago, but more intense blue fruit here. Just so dark and primary. Tons of wood showing now, and obviously needs time to integrate. Plenty of stuffing here. This is the real deal. (95 pts.)
