1978 Robert Mondavi Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This was still kicking. It had a nose reminiscent of menthol or eucalyptus, along with dried cassis and dried plums. It did give off an aroma of earthiness as well showing a touch of hung game and wet stone; and a touch of autumn leaf and brush. In the mouth, the fruit has dropped off some, but still clings on with some dried currants and a hint of black date but is much more secondary now with flavors of spicy vanillin, a touch of leather and again the menthol character that many older Napa Cabs exhibit. Altogether it was quite pleasant and complex alone, but was dwarfed by its stable mates. I think it should be drunk up with all abandon after all it is ‘old’ Napa Cabernet, of very good quality I might add. I don’t think they make it like this anymore.-rv

I've enjoyed this wine over the years and still have one left. When I had it last, it was showing now sign of passing its prime. The bottles have all been in my cellar since release.

Eric,

It's a notation so I remember who the wines and notes were with.

  • 1978 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/12/2008)
Popped and poured. Cork came out in 1 piece with relative ease. Deep garnet core, with a touch of ruby/orange bricking on the rim. Powerful nose.....full of mint, cassis, tobacco leaf, bay leaf & a touch of oregano. Medium body. Tannins are completely integrated. Very elegant and smooth with great flavors of cedar, cassis, a hint of blackberry & a touch of dill. Medium length finish is structured and lengthened by a touch of minerality. Beautifully aged Cabernet, a classic that is truly thought provoking. Could go for another 5 years but why wait?

    ...

And if I were to score based on the emotions I felt while drinking a wine that was born the same year as myself, it would rate an unequivocal 100 points. (92 pts.)

You're just a spring chicken.    Birth year wines are cool alas mine are getting a bit long in the tooth.
