Has anyone heard of this Paso Robles project(www.pharaohmoanswine.com)? Inaugural vintage is 2005, $570 per six-pack includes shipping and pyramid shaped wood box.

I hope the wine is better than the name of the winery and the packaging (try fitting a pyramid conveniently in your cellar).

How does the argument go? It must be good if it costs that much. That is still north of $85/bottle. Has it suddenly become OK to charge that much?

That looks like $95/bottle if I do the math correctly. Yikes!

Assuming the brand name is a play on the word pheromones, aka The Scent of Eros, then perhaps they're trying to take business away from Viagra.

Wow, I don't know where to start. I guess with the only good thing that can be said, which is at least they have a fine winemaker - Stephan Asseo, of L'Aventure. Beyond that I am simply left rather stunned by the whole concept

Stephan Asseo has been successful at L'Aventure, but the Pharoahmoans website talks about making a "low ethanol" Paso syrah. I'm pretty sure that the L'Aventure wines, including their syrah, check in north of 15%. If he's going to make low alcohol wines from similar terroir, it would seem like he'd have to change his winemaking rather significantly.

Wow, aside from the hubris of charging $95/bottle for your first domestic syrah release, what an embarrassing, hilariously silly name...

Are there any other $85 Syrahs (from California) out there? Pax isn't that expensive.

Oh yes; Kongagaard.

And it's $125.

Gee. Maybe this stuff is a good buy

Actually, Kongsgaard's $150 now. I stopped buying.

But how "PharaohMoans" (cracks me up just to write it) can command more than Pax, Saxum, Alban Reva, etc. defies belief...

I can't agree more. Coming from the same guys as Amuse Bouche, which I was a sucker and purchased the inaugural 2002 vintage...liked the painting, Barrett as winemaker, and the wine is incredibly average at 200/bottle! They must be trying to capture that audience of...Oh it's expensive it must be the next "cult" wine...well I bit with the first vintage but never bit again. In addition, they (Amuse Bouche) try the old...if you don't purchase we will allocate your wine to a person on the wait list; only to receive an offer letter the following year.

I'd much rather have a 6 pack of Alban Seymour.

Araujo is also $95. Kongsgaard.. I bought a couple, but despite my love of Kongsgaard, I am second guessing whether that was a good idea. These guys are insane.
