Just got an offer for the '02 Lamborghini Campoleone for $26 from Wine Library. This wine is usually at least twice this price.

What gives? It's pre-arrival, but still...

Assume it is because of the vintage - rain, rain and rain.

Here's what the Gambero Rosso has to say:

This year, though, in part because of the poor 2002 vintage, the estate's top wine Capoleone, from equal parts of sangiovese and merlot, did not reach the heights of better vintages. With around 37K bottles produced, the wine is a mid-depth ruby color, then the nose mingles redcurrant and raspberry fruitiness with vegetal walnutskin and toasty notes. The palate reflects the sensations on the nose. The attack is soft, the structure is rather weak.

I would probably pass because you can't try a bottle before purchasing. The WS is giving it a 91 which seems optimistic but they probably tried it much later than the Gambero Rosso.

i think suckling and ricardo have become friends. also ricardo has been a more frequent guest in the pages of wine spectator, both editorially and advertising wise.

"Vegetal" is just not a term you want to see in a review of a wine you might be buying.

$26 is a very cheap price for this wine however considering the 2001 and the 2000 could be had for $50-60 elsewhere, I think, unless tated and enjoyed, the wine is a pass. I have not tasted it but I have tasted other 2002s. Some I have liked, others I have not.

Especially vegetal walnutskin - I've never read a review that made me run the other way before like this one does...
