Not one of their better selections. I just took the 6 pack.

....Yes. But if there is a David Neidermeyer in the San Jose area, I'll bet he got three!

I actually got a phone call from Amy the other day, telling me she could not offer me an allocation, but told me what wines I could order. She emailed me a list...I emailed my order. Bought a mixed case of G&L, EVO and Bondi Home Ranch Pinot Noir.

Yes, it is amazing. I find it somewhat odd (not that I am complaining) that they do not have an allocation for me, but yet they take the time to call me and offer me their tasting room sales. I was actually VERY glad to hear from them, as we do try and buy the G&L everytime it is offered.

Typical Martinelli screw-up:

On Friday, Amy called to see if I wanted to buy any wine. She emailed me a list. I emailed her on Saturday at 1:00pm with my order. In that email, I requested that the wine be held for PICK-UP. At 2:42 that same afternoon, she emailed me with a total with tax and SHIPPING and said the wine would be here Tuesday or Wednesday! I replied to her at 2:55 (13 minutes later) and said we don't want the wine shipped, we want to pick it up. I hear nothing...until...yesterday I come home to find a UPS sticker on my front door. It is a wine shipment from Martinelli which is now scheduled to be delivered today between 10:30am and 2:00pm. Amy emails me this morning and says she didn't get my request to hold the wine because she only works Wed-Sun. I replied with:

Amy,

It’s no problem…however, I emailed you on Saturday with my order, and in that email (which you will see if you scroll to the bottom of this email) I requested that it be held. I have even highlighted that section in yellow. The main reason I didn’t want it shipped is because you have had it shipped to our home. Both my wife and I work. I received a notice yesterday from UPS of a shipment of wine that was attempted delivery. I now have to stay home just to make sure we get the shipment.

When you replied to me with the order total on Saturday, I replied within 15 minutes of getting that email from you stating I did not want it shipped. I’m just surprised that you missed both requests to hold the wine for me.

Thanks,

Brent

Actually I thought this was a pretty strong list of wines.
Jackass zin, Zio Tony pinot/chard/syrah, 3 Sisters pinot/chard and Bondi pinot.

Normally, I'd agree completely with that statement, but the reviews of the wines on the mailer were well below those of the last three years.

I used to love Martinelli and really looked forward to the mailer. This has changed (and I've dropped off the mailing list) for 3 reasons:

1. Well-intentioned but poor service. Shipping mistakes, ordering mistakes, you name it they do it with an astonishing regularity. They're pleasant enough to talk to on the phone, but totally scatter-brained and disorganized about running a business.

2. The "hostage" problem. I don't like their whites and don't drink much white wine generally. I like some but not all of their reds. Generally out of a six pack there are only 1 or 2 wines I want. Constantly having to dump the others is a huge hassle.

3. Their reds (both pinot and zin) seem to be getting riper and riper each vintage, to the point of being very hot, baked, stewy, raisiny and pruny. I used to be more tolerant of this style but am tiring of it. I'm drinking less zin these days, and for pinot prefer Radio Coteau, Kosta Browne, Brewer Clifton, Dehlinger, Aubert, Talley, etc.

Will still try G&L each vintage to see if I want to order some. Great pizza wine.

But I'm off the Martinelli bandwagon for the most part. Kind of sad b/c their wines used to get me really excited. The '99 Pinot Reserve is a wine I will always have very fond memories of.

It's one of the very best American PNs I've ever had. I'm still holding onto one bottle to see how it ages.

Totally agree -- one of the best American pinots ever for me too, no question. I liked this so much after first trying it that I bought two and a half cases, which sadly are all gone. Whenever I think about this wine I get a warm glow inside though. Truly special.

Are you talking about "1999 Martinelli Pinot Noir Reserve Martinelli Vineyard"? CellarTracker says I have two of them. The "community rating" is 91.5 points. Guess I gotta try one.
=======================================

I have never been excited about Martinelli's Pinots. And their Chards imo were downright bad. The only reason I joined their list was to be able to get the Jackass Hill Zin (not the Jackass Zin; the JackassHill Zin). In the five years I was on their list I was only able to buy one Jackass Hill and that was over the phone (never offered to me on mailing list) from a sweet young thing I that I sweet-talked into letting me buy it... and two weeks later she was gone.

That's the short story as to why I dropped off the list over two years ago.

The other story involves five names:
Niederauer
Niederhauer
Neiderauer
Neiderhauser
Neidermeyer

When one starts saying that longevity on the list counts the above spells "screwed up".

That's the one. I'll give you an idea of why some scores were relatively low. I brought a bottle of this to an offline at a Syrah/Shiraz tasting in NJ a few years ago. It was splash decanted for three hours before tasting and it was spectacular. Every one agreed on that. I had also tried that wine soon after decanting and it was relatively closed. I haven't had one of these in quite a while, but I'm guessing an hour in a decanter might be needed. I'd taste after decanting and take a sip every ten minutes til it started to sing.

I know what you mean. That had me down for
Ballance (Home address)
Ballance (Business address)
Balance (Home address)

So I wasn't building any purchase history under my name. I don't even want to get started on the time they shipped my order in mid-July when I specifically asked them not to. Bet you can't guess what happened to the wine.

Sounds like a good place for a Martinelli pinot.

After we finished with Syrah/Shiraz wines, we tasted the extra wines people had brought. I also brought a Scheurebe Eiswein.

Anyone know what their policy is re: dropping you off the list? I have been ordering for 3-4 consecutive vintages (both mailers) but am comtemplating a move in about a year so am trying to prune a few lists so I don't have to move as much wine.

I believe you're dropped if you miss two mailers. If you want to stay on their list, call them and tell thewm you're moving and will miss one mailer but you want to keep your seniority on their list.
