What??  I guess I better send an e-mail to Dan!  A Peterson not getting an allocation??  That can't be!

I guess they don't know we're related..:-)

I used to look forward to this one.

I'll pass along at cost all of my allocation to the locals. If they don't want all of it I'll be passing on the balance.

Just sell the leftovers to your favorite restaurant at cost.

 

 

In three-tiered states, that is impossible. Neither wine shops nor restaurants can/will buy from private individuals. Believe me, I've tried.

You can occassionally find a retailer down here that'll back door it but they're rare.

Very rare - retailers have to account for everything purchased. If anything shows up as not from distributors they are hosed.

Even less likely finding a restaurant to do it as well. We have a local spot up here where we used to BYOB until the state inspector showed up one morning and found a patrons bottle behind the bar without the state sticker on it. $15,000.00 fine. Damn near closed the guy down.

Who are they protecting with these draconian polices?? Sorry in advance for the thread drift.

3 tier means it passes through 3 separate pairs of hands. Supplier->Distributor-Retailer (some say Distributor->Retailer->Consumer but it's actually 1 level above that because it's 3 levels of distribution of the product before it arrives to the consumer). Historically before all of the lawsuits virtually all liquor was required to go through each level. When prohibition was repealed these were the rules put into place in order to protect the monopolies that control liquor distribution.

Yep, when we brought in at that restaurant the restaurant violated the law allowing it. They could of been fined. The laws in Texas are a little complex depending on the type of permit the restaurant obtains from the state but in short if a restaurant has a license that allows them to sell distilled spirits then they can't allow BYOB. If they have any other license they can allow it. Unfortunately, there is a ton of confusion about this in the state so most restaurants that hold any form a liquor license just flat out won't allow you to BYOB.

Who are they protecting? The distributors. Period. Anybody tells you anything else they're lying. Why does the state's politicians continue to allow the distributors to make money hand over fist with their state protected monopolies? The distributors contributed well north of $500,000 to politicians during the last session. You do the math.

It is an evil system.  You should see the parties that the distributors hold for the Texas congress reps.  Resorts and lots of booze, go figure.  Evil and corrupt. 

For once I'm glad to be in Kalifornia! If we couldn't do BYOB, we'd almost never go out!

That's one of the reasons that we eat at home so much. My cellar is better than 98% of the restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the cost per bottle is roughly 1/3 of most lists in the area.

Evil is right, we've got it good here in CA, but give the lobbiests half a chance and they'll F things up for us here too
