It's funny, prior to the 'microbrew' and lager craze of the last 10 years, nobody in these parts (near the brewery) would touch Yuengling. People avoided it like the plague. Now they can't get enough of it!!

Anchor doesn't do cans (they aren't big enough to have a canning line). However they do have plastic bottles with crown caps (the kind you need an opener for). That way you can get one at Pac Bell park (which is why they originally did this).

Btw, Anchor is the greatest brewery in the world!

Anderson Valley Brewery. All their styles across the board rock. Kind of located in wine country too! Their beer festival in the spring is quite the event, especially the post festival party at the brewery.

my local grocery store has anchor in bottles.....not plastic but real bottles....

With all due respect to the Bay Area, living in the epicenter of West Coast brewing activity, we have too many favorites to list here. A few really top breweries would be Hair of the Dog, Lucky Lab, Bridgeport, McMinnamins, Pelican, heck, I could go on for a long time.

Usually though I just brew my own - Pale Ales, Maerzen Beirs, Pilsners, etc. It keeps me occupied while I dream about my own Black Hole.

Used to like Burgermeister but they are gone. Now I drink Regal Pale. I especially like the anagrams on the inside of the bottle caps

Harp lager - my "every day" beer - love the stuff. But only the one brewed in Ireland - not the Canada "fake" Harp.

Guiness - if I can't find Harp

Shiner Bock - a Texas beer - if I can't find Harp or Guiness

Fredericksburg Brewery - any of their amber ales.

Bass - if I can't find any of the above. And only the one brewed in the UK - not the Canada brewed version!

Whats the price of a beer (say a heineken) in an average bar Stateside?

The price of beers varies depending upon the beer and the neighborhood of the bar. I'd say anywhere from $2.50 to $6 or $7 for a pint of beer. These days Heineken will probably run you at least $4 a glass. I haven't had it in ages as there is plenty of local stuff that I'd much rather drink.

Completely agree but it is an easy way for me to get an idea of what an average beer would cost. I prefer local brewed beers as well.

Actually, it is not alcoholic. It is what my folks used to get for us boys when we were growing up before they'd let us have beer (that started around 15-16).

My bros loved the Malzbier, but I just couldn't get used to it/

TJ - Was introduced to Sammiclaus when in London. Definitely an interesting interpretation of beer - tastes more like Port than beer.

My favs:
Sweetwater "420" (a local brewery)
Guinness (on tap only)
Sam Smith's (almost all of them from those big bottles)
Michelob Dark (with bbq especially ribs in Memphis)
Bass (always a quality choice)

Old favorites:
Old English 800 (high school)
Pabst Blue Ribbon (cheap and plentiful in college)
Busch Light Draft (a fraternity party favorite @ $10/case)

And I'm still inclined to order Miller Lite when it's gonna be one of those nights....

Ddb, I agree. Samiclaus and Eku are definitely acquired tastes. I doubt I'd really dig them nowadays. I think Eku makes a special reserve pilsner that I have has only a few times which was a joy to drink. I do not think it is imported to the States...
