2001 Toni Jost Bacharacher Hahn Riesling Spatlese, Mitterrhein, 9.5% alcohol, 60 g.l. residual sugar, $27.99

Recommended by Bill at the Wine Street Store in San Diego during my search for Christoffel's (he only had 2). Also bought Fritz Haag and Weins-Prum from him as well.

Straw color, fat slow legs. Nose if relatively thick and more mineral than fruit. Not as minerally as a Nahe and not as heavy as a rheingau. Good fruit in the mouth - peach and nectarine. Decent finish and good balance as the acidity really cuts through the sweetness.

Good wine that will definitely get better. Wasn't on my original buy list and for the price, I'm glad I only bought 2. It would be a fabulous wine in any other year, but this year the Mosel's flirt with greatness and the other wines that I bought from him (Christoffel, Fritz Haag and Weins-Prum) are better and they are cheaper (except for the Fritz Haag). But who knows, I'll keep the remaining bottle to drink with the rest 7 years from now and judge again.

Tried it again last night (the 2nd night). It really opened up, the acidity was not as biting and numbing and the white peach fragrance was very charming and the fruit really came out in the mouth as well. I've been trying not to comment on any of the 2001 Germans until the second night and I should have kept to that.
