I felt like a clean wine this afternoon, so cracked one of these open.

The wine displayed typical German 2001 colours, of light colour with a greenish tinge. The nose was concentrated mineral notes with sweeter lime and off bitter grapefruit notes. Some other tropical flavours danced around but harder to pin down. The palate had a searing level of acidity which balanced the light hint of sweetness on the fore palate. The fruit had an almost green under-developed character to them on the palate and coupled with the acids made it a very austere although exceptionally defined wine. I really think it needs time, although I know many people like this young acidic style it really is not to my liking. However I score this 92 points and look forward to the other 23 btles in a couple of years.

Nice notes, Jeremy. I've had the '01 Spatlese and Auslese and loved them. I'm not a fan of dry Rieslings and normally only buy BAs, TBAs, and Eisweins, but the ratings these wines garnered got me to buy them. Thank goodness!

I agree. They're excellent wines. I must admit I am more of a fan of the Spatlese and Auslese than I am of Beerenausles and TBA's. I do like good German Eiswein though!

Jeremy,

It sounds like the Prum is shutting down. It has always had a lot of acid, but there was some lush fruit on release. It's time for these to nap.

From your last post in this thread it seems like you are not a fan of botrytis. True or false? I personally prefer the pure expression of Riesling to that masked by fungus effects.

I don't mind botrytis, but I prefer Sem Sav rather than riesling. That overt apricot of bot wines often disguises many of the features I enjoy in clean fruit driven wines like Riesling.

I agree I think it may be starting to shut down a bit.

One of the best Kabinetts I've tried from this vintage; drinks like a traditional Spatlese.

If mine eyes have not been deceived by some spell, I think I saw the '02 of this bottle for over $30!

That sounds expensive.

The 2002 spatlese was being offered for around $28. I posted the link in the Wine Commerce section. I hope that it is not all gone.
