Deep gold, heavy botrytis on the nose, masses of fruit all dripping with honey, with very high acidity. HOWEVER... the bottle had a tell-tale drip coming from under the lead capsule. I removed it completely and confirmed that the leak had come from this bottle. Within 3 hours the wine became virually undrinkable. Given the very fine nature of this wine this is a tragedy. If you buy a bottle of this it may need another 20 years, or it could be dead before you even open it. Very sad.

Nice notes, Mr. Eiswein. Welcome to the site. I, too, am a fan of German Eisweins, but my favorite ones are not or minimally botrytised. I've had several Scheurebe Eisweins that have been amongst the very greatest dessert wines I've ever had. What's your opinion of Scheurebe Eisweins?

I don't think I've ever had one, though in 2004 I bought a few bottles of 2003 eiswein that didn't specify riesling (I got them in Bernkastel after getting into the habit of going there several times a year just to buy eiswein as it's so difficult to buy any good German wine in London) and they may have been scheurebe. Either way, I tried one bottle and wasn't impressed so I've never touched the rest. I may just try one this week, in fact. Eiswein in Bernkastel is also often less than half the price it fetches here in London, so I can save money and indulge myself all at the same time! They have a good range, as well.

The 1983 Kreuznacher Hollenbrabd Scheurebe Eiswein is the best dessert wine I've ever had. We had it at dinner side-by-side with the 1967 d'Yquem and 9 out of 9 people preferred the Eiswein, though the d'Yquem was also amazing.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't normally consider a scheurebe, but I'll look out for some when I visit Rauenthal in the Rheingau next month. This will be the first time I've ever visited a German wine region other than the MSR, except when staying with friends in Würzburg.
