2003 Kurt Darting Dürkheimer Nonnengarten Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Pfalz, Bad Durkheim (5/23/2006)
WIML87,PURPLE88,WA85,NOWS

Tasted May 23, 2006 at home. Served from a full liter bottle that was enclosed by Stelvin. 10.0% alcohol. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Weiss Wein glass. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of honeysuckle, peach and födel. Flavors of peach, limeaid, apple juice and a touch of Asian spice. Crisp acidity, lively on the palate. Drink now. Based on the local retail price of $16.99 a bottle I’d say the value here is acceptable. (87 pts.)

Thanks for the note. Low acid years are usually not kind to Darting, but it looks like that bottle did well.

And I hope for your sake that the pricing structure in your neck of the woods improves someday. It's really too bad that you have to pay about 15-20% higher than normal retail for these wines.

Pricing will change eventually as long as out of state retailers continue to be able to ship to Texas (right now there is a temporary injunction allowing it). At the moment though it's typically cheaper for us to buy from some place like Wine Library and pay the shipping fee and still come out anywhere from $2-3 a bottle cheaper and in some cases much more.

You are so right about the Darting in low acid years. I have been waiting to get my hands on the 2004 DN auslese since the 2003 was somewhat disappointing compared to the outstanding 2001. Somehow they keep offering the 2003's and not the 2004's.

Terry Theise did not select the 2004 Rieslaner Auslese, but rather a BA instead. He did select the 2005 though.

Really? I could have sworn that it was in his catalog. Someone in Michigan offered it to me but it sounded like futures, which is strange because it was a month ago. I did a search for the 2001 (funny how I can pick some up once in awhile) and they said they were out (even though it was on WineSearcher) but he said he could get the 2004. Is the 2005 any good?

I should know about the 2005 in another 10 days.

Sounds good. I an very interested in your opinion. I just ordered some 2004 from that place in Michigan. It will be interesting to see if it is a 2004 after all.

I just got an email from Michigan that they were sent 2003's instead of the 2004's that they ordered. The imported claimed that the 2004's were sold out so they sent the 2003's. Actually I ordered 3 cases of the 2004 9-12 months ago and they gave me 2003's - I should have sent them back. I think I've heard enough of the tall tails about the 2004. Rieslingfan your explanation makes the most sense.

And by the way, the 2005 is very good, but a totally different style of wine than the 2001. It's a true auslese, not a big BA/baby TBA. I really liked it, and think it's delicious wine, but it may not be what you are looking for.

I had the '05 at the Thiese tasting on Tuesday. The 2005 of this wine is very, very good and an excellent value.

You were there too? Indeed the 2005 Dartings were quite good across the board. I loved the fragrance of the Muscat, and the 2005 Rieslaner was very, very good wine, but a totally different animal from the 2001.

Yes, I agree. But I thought the Kabinett was delicious and is a relatively cheap bottle of wine with lots of character. Donnhoff was a disappointment (only because they are on another level) and I loved all the Hexamer offerings. Selbach was very good as well.

BTW, the winery of the entire tasting to me was Schloss Gobelsburg. Great across the board.

Gobelsburg was quite good, but I think some of that had to do with pretty disappointing showings from a number of the Austrian wines. Gobelsburg was a total star by comparison.

I really liked most of the Darting offerings. Laura was quite enamored by their kabinetts, while I loved the Huxelrebe TBA. I did not like the Donnhoff Estate or Kabinett. I thought the Brucke Spatlese was outstanding though.

I agree. I'll still be a buyer of Donnhoff as I'll chalk the poor showing up to bottle shock/travel shock.

I wish I had known you were there. I would have dragged you to another Chateauneuf/Shiraz tasting I went to at Beacon right after with Peter Wygant.

Thanks. I guess I'll give up on the 2004 and look for the 2005 to try.
