  • 2003 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Middle Mosel (1/3/2006)

Super wine from the Premier Cru blow-out. It does lack the acidity to be a long-term keeper but is a great drink now. It will be the perfect summer quaffer. Note: the cork had an area that was soaked to the top so perhaps these have encountered some heat. (92 pts.)

Again from the Premier Cru blow-out - the cork was perfect on this one

Tasted 05/19/06 from a Turley Riedel. Pale, pale yellow in the glass, looked like apple juice diluted 85(water)/15(apple juice). Nose was hard to pick up but I got faint petro and lemon. Palate was a killer. Lychee, mango, all those tropical fruits. Beautiful on the palate. Served with shrimp potstickers. I purchased this for 13.xx from Premier Cru when they had that ridiculous sale, wished I would have bought cases of this. Highly recommended this as a summer quaffer, especially for non-winos. BD93

Had this for a second day. Still same good tropical fruits there that greet you at the door but acidity swoops in and puts a small drizzle on the parade. The wine got flabby. I would not recommend drinking this wine over days. Open and drink immediately.

The wine was either acidic or flabby. Not both. They are mutually exclusive.

Maybe the acid came on strong then disappeared. I'm taking an educated guess because the acidity of the 2003's are deceiving and does seem to come and go while you are drinking it. I'm not sure if it is the overripe fruit dominating or what. Most of the rieslings that I have consumed have done well the 2nd and 3rd day. I recork it (I usually use a stopper) and put it in the frig.

This is a ridiculous bargain.

Another bottle gone here last night. I'm finding different levels of acidity from bottle to bottle, perhaps some bottle variation. At this rate we'll be through our stash before the end of June.

I'm finding the same thing with the spatlesen. It seems like I have found more variation in the 2003's than in past years. Since I bought 20 cases of the 2003 Christoffels through the Skurnik route, I have tried a lot of those as well, so it is not unique to the Premier Cru imported lots. I heard that they added acidity to this vintage (I'm not sure if this is kosher but I heard that somewhere) so the appearance may vary more than natural acidity. Actually that is a guess, but I have noticed the same thing. Fortunately, I have enjoyed every bottle so it has not been a factor.

Actually, I've found the UW Auslese*** to be remarkably consistent. So far each wine has tasted almost exactly like the others.

Make no mistake, they've all been good. Just a bit variable in acidity with the same foods.
