A few of us will be committing infacide tonight. They will be bringing a Pontet Canet(Pauillac) and Giscours(Margaux). Which of the one's below has the best chance to be drinking well? I still haven't deecided what to bring.

Branaire - St. Julien
Faugeres - St. Emilion
Gruaud Larose - St. Julien
Haut Batailley - Pauillac
La Louviere - Pessac-Leognan
Lagrange - St. Julien
Lanessan - Haut-Medoc
Lynch-Bages - Pauillac
Talbot - St. Julien

My vote goes to the Faugeres and maybe the Branaire Ducru (although it needs a few more years to really explode). Definitely NOT the Lynch Bages or Gruaud Larose - those typically need at least 15 years to really get going (IMO). Not sure about the Lanessan as I haven't tried it, but since it's an Haut-Medoc it's probably approachable at this point.

I don't have an opinion on the others. (PS - The Pontet Canet definitely needs a minimum of 10 years to get going)

Have fun!

Sorry I didn't see this until now. I would have voted for the Faugeres.

It isn't on your list, but another one in that general price range that is drinking well is the Lascombes.

I ended up going with the Faugeres. I opened it about 2 hours before we arrived at the restaurant. It was showing nicely. The best of the night was the Giscours. The Pontet was nice but very tannic. I tried a glass the next day that was excellent. That one needs lots of time.

Would you hold the Faugeres longer or start drinking it now? I have a case of the '00.

I think with a case in the cellar I would go ahead and pop one. Pick a night where you can follow it's evolution. I opened two hours prior to tasting and we drank over the next 3. I thought it had a great nose and excellent fruit and structure. The tannins were not overpowering like with the Pontet.

Wildy late on this. Nice to know that the Faugeres is opening up as I have a case as well. When I move I will be popping it from hock and will take the opportunity to open one. The 1998 took a long time to get going and I assumed that the 2000 would do likewise.

Giscours gets away with early drinking becuase of its nose, you can get away with anything with a nose like that.
